Hull Thundercats 0 – 3 Barton Blockers Senior
This afternoon saw our 2 local league sides finally getting start their seasons underway with both in action against our friends from over the bridge Barton Blockers Volleyball Club.
First up were Thundercats against last seasons league winners Barton Blockers Senior. This was always going to be a baptism of fire for a very inexperienced team Thundercats team containing no fewer then 5 debutants, which Barton Seniors took full advantage of having sent a strong team winning 0-3 (25-9, 25-7, 25-7).
Despite the convincing score line there were plenty of positive for Thundercats with all debutants benefitting from plenty of game time and stand out performances from Player of the Match Joanna Jurkiewicz and Lara San Juan whom showed no fear passing again some big hitters.
Hull Thunder GLBs 3 – 0 Barton Blockers Junior
Onwards to our second game of the afternoon with Hull Thunder GLBs taking on Barton Blockers Junior. The GLBs were looking for a strong start to the season as they strive to win the league this season after losing our to Barton Seniors on the very last game of last season. And start well they did doing to Barton more inexperienced squad what had happened to Thunders newbies early that afternoon, taking a largely uneventful game 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-19).
The only event of note during the game was when Barton’s player/coach Phil Hewitt tried to take a the setters ball even though the setter had it under control and subsequently took an inadvertent backward head butt to the throats leaving him crawling round on all 4s rasping like a cat trying to cough up a hair ball.
Despite this being a routine display from the GLBs there was a massive positive coming out of the game with middle Mike Moiser not only playing his first ever volleyball game but also picking up the Player of the Match accolade to boot.
Next up for Thunder is the Yorkshire Premiership Ladies away trip to York Vipers on Monday evening and the NVL men’s team travelling to Nottingham for their second triangular fixtures of the season.
